It is more complex than that.
If one values life and liberty (in that order) then it requires several things.
Valuing life first means acknowledging that all real living systems have sets of constraints that are required for their existence. If one values self aware life, then one must be responsible for the maintenance of all such sets of constraints that are required for the continued existence of all such individuals.
One of those required sets of constraints is cooperation.
When one spends the time to look deeply at the strategic contexts of the evolution of complex systems, it becomes clear that every new level of complexity is predicated on a new level of cooperation. And that does rapidly get very complex, for a host of reasons I will not explicitly address here. But if you are interested then there is much work to be done investigating them.
If one values liberty, then that rapidly gets very complex also.
Any real expression of liberty results in diversity.
Any expression of diversity that is not actually an unreasonable threat to the life or liberty of anyone else must be accepted and respected. That can get very uncomfortable for our more conservative aspects (which we all have, at multiple levels). Liberal or conservative is not a simple binary, it is a spectrum that applies to thousands of different aspects within each and every one of us.
One of the aspects that one must be prepared to accept diversity in is the aspect of “enlightenment”, in as much as the term has real meaning in reality.
It seems very likely that reality is sufficiently complex and unknowable and uncertain that we must all necessarily have simplistic understandings of it (however complex those understandings are). Thus we are all “wrong” to some degree. The essence of science is about becoming less wrong as time and context allow. This means that some people will have very simplistic models and understandings, where complex infinities are simplified down to simple binaries like Right/Wrong, Good/Bad etc. Accepting that is part of accepting and respecting freedom and diversity.
At higher orders, it does impose levels of responsibility on agents.
Every level of freedom claimed has to necessarily come with levels of responsibility if it is to be survivable – (and life trumps liberty, so responsibility is required).
So I a cautiously optimistic for a generally prosperous future for humanity, and nothing in my world is certain, all things are some balance of probabilities at some set of levels.
