[ 26/3/20 – on my facebook page]
It is really hard for me to have much idea how most people think, as my brain seems to be very near the edge of a number of distributions. I see everything as systems. I am a biochemist by training, have run a software business for 34 years, and at primary school could solve any math problem as fast as anyone could write it down. I wasn’t that fast once I got into complex algebra and differential calculus, but I was still orders of magnitude faster than most. I have been like that, seen the world like that, for over 50 years.
In 1991 I wrote this web page (http://www.fishnet.co.nz/v2020/issues.htm) – where it clearly states that the only option we have against pandemic is isolation (it was a very old idea then).
Last year I wrote this piece (https://tedhowardnz.wordpress.com/2019/10/31/aside-from-climate-change-what-have-you-worried-about-the-future-of-humanity-and-the-planet/) where I again stressed that the only effective response to a pandemic with a long incubation time is isolation.
And I have written a lot about the many dangers facing humanity, including those of our modern money system.
In this pandemic we need to ensure that everyone gets enough to eat – no questions asked.
Maintaining isolation is critically important – much more important than enforcing any laws or anything else. That means ensuring everyone has what they need to live. And that gets complex.
This is just one very complex set of issues present.
NZ’s first governor (Grey) was addicted to Laudanum (opium), but like many addicts, provided he had a supply, he could be very high functioning. Most people have no real idea how many high functioning addicts are essential parts of our society at every level right now. We need them (I’m not one of them – I’m just a very observant high functioning autistic geek that has had a very unusual and eventful life that has let me see a lot of things most people never notice). I have not seen anyone addressing this suite of issues. It cannot be addressed in any publicly accountable way – by definition – as officially it doesn’t exist, but it does exist.
We need to deal with what is real, not what we would like to be real, or believe to be real.
NZ does have an underworld, of many different types of gangs and individuals that are completely outside of most people’s social reality; yet they are real and present, and the virus makes no distinction.
Any attempt to remove those groups will essentially result in war, with massive civilian casualties – so is not an option.
If we want to beat the virus, then we must find anonymous ways in which those groups can survive, and those unofficial yet “essential needs” can be met. This is a very tricky problem, many levels deep – no possibility of simple solutions – and it needs to be solved – and very quickly (this week), if isolation is going to work in the way it needs to.
