Mayor’s statement on Kaikoura District COuncil Facebook Page

Well done Craig.

If we ensure everyone is doing it, it will work, the virus will be eliminated from NZ, and we can return to something near normal. We need to do that with compassion, because it will be very difficult for many – old habits don’t go away because of official rules.

Preventing reinfection from overseas once we have eliminated it from here will take a bit of work.

Once Level 4 is over, then we need to put in place a series of measures to reduce the probability of reintroduction to close to zero.

Something like:

1/ compulsory testing of all travelers to NZ before they leave their home – within 2 days of doing so.

2/ immediate quarantine on arrival and testing again here. A clear result required before they are released from quarantine here. Must have GPS tracking app on their cell phone for their entire visit (in case they are carriers and contact tracking is required – then the track can be inspected), and record every person they touch (a photo) until their second clear test. Must observe 2m separation until the second clear test result. Perhaps a bib brightly coloured announcing “visitor” – with a unique number on it.

3/ A second test here 2 -4 days after leaving quarantine. – would seem to be reasonable and workable, and cheap enough to work.

It would likely reduce visitor numbers, but not to zero.

Strangely it might actually encourage tourism if NZ was a truly safe place to visit – there won’t be many of those on the planet for a while.

About Ted Howard NZ

Seems like I might be a cancer survivor. Thinking about the systemic incentives within the world we find ourselves in, and how we might adjust them to provide an environment that supports everyone (no exceptions) - see www.tedhowardnz.com/money
