Quora – Why should we trust science to save us from global warming?

The tools of science can be used to solve any real problem, but cannot be prescient about all possible long term consequences.

Science is a continual process of hypothesis (a idea about something), experimental design (finding a way to test the idea), experiment (doing the test) and evaluation (being as confident as possible about the results of the test and what the implications of those result mean).

Science is only science if it is repeatable, by some other group(s).

Science creates tools.

What people do with tools is a matter of ethics.

Evolutionary epistemology and ontology can help to inform ethics, and people still need to actually be ethical for ethics to have any real impact.

Science can tell us that reliance on market mechanisms alone fails when fully automated systems become a significant part of the mix. Markets create perverse and dangerous incentive structures when fully automated systems are present.

Fully automated systems are the only realistic way to solve the climate change problems and create an improving standard of living for all people world wide.

So we have some very real issues.

This is really complex stuff.

It does not simplify easily or usefully.

It is going to demand international cooperation (not global government – that is dangerous, but real trust and cooperation between very diverse agents).

That is going to pose many levels of challenges, particularly given the broad spectrum of interpretive schema (ways of thinking and understanding) already present in reality. It will demand levels of integrity and honesty that are absent currently.

There must be increased levels of integrity and trust, up and down those levels of schema.

There must be real delivery of security and freedom and reasonable abundance to all.

A high base at bottom, without limiting the top.

That is doable, and there will be challenges.

There are real environmental limits necessary for engineering on earth, and very real needs to limit our impacts on the natural environment. And with fully automated systems, space based manufacturing gives a real way out of many of the constraints of a purely earth based view of what is possible.

So doable and challenging, and necessary.

About Ted Howard NZ

Seems like I might be a cancer survivor. Thinking about the systemic incentives within the world we find ourselves in, and how we might adjust them to provide an environment that supports everyone (no exceptions) - see www.tedhowardnz.com/money
