What do America’s Independence declaration, Canada’s federalization of 3 colonies, and Britain’s “Brexit” all have in common, or how do you see them as possibly related?
Such a complex topic.
So many levels of invalid assumptions, evolving understandings, obfuscation and flat out lying for personal gain.
Most Americans (most individuals, world wide), are “dumbed down” by the educational systems.
People are taught to follow leaders, believe experts, rather than to think for themselves and trust their own intuitions at least enough to test them out.
The last time I visited Washington DC, I spent a couple of hours just walking the streets, from the Capitol down to the White House and around the general area. I read the inscriptions on buildings and sidewalks, talked to people on the streets, even homeless people and beggars. I left there in tears, wondering what the people who founded that place on such high ideals would think of what it has become in practice today. Now quite probably the deepest core of corruption and unbridled greed in existence on this planet.
So many good people there, and so many of the other sort too- and for the most part, the other sort run the place – in practice.
So for me it is sad that anyone, anywhere, celebrates nationalism.
For me, it is evidence of the divide and rule strategy used by the most corrupt of elites.
The science, the logic, the games theory, is clear, beyond any shadow of reasonable doubt, that the greatest benefit comes from universal cooperation – but that requires going beyond exchange values, beyond markets – to actually valuing life and liberty (those high ideals upon which America claims it was founded, which now exist as pale shadows if they exist at all).
Most Americans seem to me to live in a world view that is intentionally crippled (not by them, but by those who benefit most from their slavery), so that they actually view their state of economic slavery as freedom, and attack people who try to point out that fact.
Brexit is little different.
Another clash of power elites.
Nothing as it seems.
Half truths and outright lies at every level.
One of my Great grandfathers came to New Zealand at the age of 16 (he actually left England at 15, and had a birthday on board during the 4 month sailing ship trip out), to escape a system where he had to “doff his hat” to the “Lord of the Manor”. He went as far from that system as it was physically possible to go – the other side of the planet.
So you could say that I come from a long line of stroppy individuals, or you could say that I am one current instantiation of a venerable lineage that values individual life and individual liberty above all else, and rejects all institutional authority, in and of itself, and accepts and uses such authority only in so far as doing so in practice seems to support life and liberty for all (and that is often a tough call to make).
So I honour the principles of liberty and respect for individual life that were present in the founding of America, and have little respect (other than for the force they wield) for most of the current political and legal systems within America. They have been subverted at all levels to meet the needs of the few, at the cost of the many.
So American “Independence” occurs to me as a sad joke – Orwellian doublespeak – as Americans seem to me to be about the most ideologically enslaved people on the planet, the vast majority of them unable to even envisage what independence might be – fooled into thinking that free markets mean freedom – when all they really mean is slavery.
