Ideapod – Climate Change

Ideapod – Climate Change

What’s stopping us acting?

Global climate change is easy to solve in the technical sense – we just change to solar power.

If we continue with existing exponential trends, we will have done that by 2030.

The major issue is thinking in terms of money.
Money is about making profit, and the most profit can be made from monopolies.
It is hard to monetise a distributed energy source like solar – it is essentially free. Energy companies will resist it with every tool at their disposal.

Even with today’s tools, the conversion efficiencies are amazing. Depending on local climate, typical energy output from solar arrays are between 2 and 4 gigawatt hours per hectare per year. Biomass conversion is typically about 1% of that, at around 25 megawatt hours per year (at 30T biomass per ha /yr).

Battery storage technologies are developing nicely. Within another decade we will be able to get the vast bulk of the energy we need directly from solar.

Weaning people off money and markets is much trickier.

About Ted Howard NZ

Seems like I might be a cancer survivor. Thinking about the systemic incentives within the world we find ourselves in, and how we might adjust them to provide an environment that supports everyone (no exceptions) - see www.tedhowardnz.com/money
