Ideapod – Harnessing Madness

Ideapod – Creativity is Harnessing the Beast that is Madness

While I agree with the general theme – I disagree with the phrasing.

It is not going out of your mind.
It is going outside the constraints of socially accepted dogma (most of which we accept implicitly from the cultures of our birth).

Being outside of the socially accepted sets of concepts or norms of behaviour is one of the culturally accepted definitions of madness – and it isn’t really that at all.

A willingness to be open to possibilities beyond the accepted is a fundamental part of creativity.
We all have it.
It comes with our neural networks.
Most cultures do their best to train us out of using it (at many different levels).

Consider that it is in the interests of the predatory strategies within any culture to keep all prey within easily capturable norms of behaviour. Being unpredictable makes one hard to catch. Being predictable, far from being safe, is a very high risk strategy.

About Ted Howard NZ

Seems like I might be a cancer survivor. Thinking about the systemic incentives within the world we find ourselves in, and how we might adjust them to provide an environment that supports everyone (no exceptions) - see www.tedhowardnz.com/money
