The only request I ever make of the Divine is to “use me” for good purpose.
If you were to make a request about you and your life overall, to Life or the Divine or whatever is ultimately operating your life, what would that request be?
Or in other words, what do you want your life to “be about?”
This question doesn’t really work for me.
I don’t see any ultimates in operation.
I see many sources of influence, with the degree of influence changing significantly with circumstance and over time.
It seems to me that we are all the result of evolution by natural selection happening at many levels.
That process has produced our bodies (including our brains and all their behavioural tendencies) and the cultures that we get born into.
Both of those things seem to give rise to this personal experience of being that we seem to have (I’m quite certain about mine, and can only assume that everyone else has something similar).
Evolution certainly has a competitive aspect to it, and it is also true that all major advances in evolution are characterised by new levels of cooperation.
Once those many levels of bodily organisation are enhanced by the many levels of cultural organisation in the form of language and concepts in particular, then something else starts to be available, in terms of choice.
I choose my life to be about exploring the possibilities inherent in existence.
It seems logical to me that if I wish to continue doing so for a long time, then I need to create conditions that are conducive to living a very long time. That means eliminating or mitigating as many sources of risk as possible, without limiting the possibilities available (a very complex exercise).
Thus it seems clear to me that the only logical way to achieve such an outcome is to create systems that support and empower all individuals, and provide the most life friendly environment possible to all. The injustice inherent in alternative models creates too much risk in the long term.
I don’t want to be used for any other entity’s purpose.
I want to choose my own purpose.
And mostly those choices are cooperative in nature, which is advantageous to all people.
I choose that purpose to be to create systems that support all sentient life forms in living as long a life as they want, with as much freedom and health and technical options available as possible.
A life that respects other life, the systems that sustain life, and the diversity that must be present if free choice is to have any real meaning at all.
