Birds

Question of the Day~ November 6, 2013~ Birds

Do you have a LOVE for Birds? Please tell us your story if you have one.

I have a love of life, that includes birds.
I spend a lot of time observing birds.
I have raised several bird by hand, mynahs mostly teaching a couple to speak, and also a tern.
When I was a kid we kept a lot of fowls – several varieties of hens, including Rhode Island Reds, and several bantam varieties, as well as guinea fowl.
In the last month I have spent about 4 hours at a Gannet nesting site, and about two hours at a spotted shag nesting site, and probably another 4 hours observing various other bird species in various activities.
I checked in with our local Department of conservation manager yesterday about the state of our Huttons Shearwater recovery site (where we have a couple of acres surrounded by predator proof fence and are trying to establish a third breeding colony for a species that is now down to nesting in only two sites, down from around 40 sites 50 years ago – mainly due to predation by wild pigs and stoats and ferrets (these are birds that nest in burrows in large colonies)). 7 pairs are breeding at the new site so far this year.
Its not an all consuming passion, and it is definitely an interest. While playing a round of golf I probably spend about 15-30 minutes on average consciously observing the birds I see on the course.

About Ted Howard NZ

Seems like I might be a cancer survivor. Thinking about the systemic incentives within the world we find ourselves in, and how we might adjust them to provide an environment that supports everyone (no exceptions) - see www.tedhowardnz.com/money
