Solutions

Question of the Day ~ May 21, 2013 Resolution/Solutions

Do you have any specific method or resource you use for seeking resolution and/or solutions in your life?

My approach to finding solutions in my life varies significantly.

Most often solutions come to me immediately by intuition, after a little contemplation and I just do them.

If no solution is immediately apparent then:
1/ Read everything I can find about the topic, particularly well documented first hand attempts to solve the problem at hand, or something logically equivalent;
2/ Do something else to put it out of my mind;
3/ Contemplate the problem again – and see what comes up;
4/ Try stuff out, until I find something that works.
Often I will redo the steps looking for a more abstract level at which to approach the problem, to see if that gets past whatever is constraining my attempts to develop a solution. [That seems to be a potentially infinitely recursive subset of possibility space.]

I tend to trust my intuition as to the required level of elegance needed in any particular situation. As a first order approximation, the more complex the problem, the more elegant the solution should be (and sometimes time pressures demand ugly yet functional kludges).
