Memory

Question of The Day October 6, 2012 ~ “Memory” or “Remembering” ~

How does “memory” or “remembering” differ from re-experiencing pictures in your mind of past experiences?

For me, seeing pictures in my mind is sometimes part of remembering.

Remembering is often a mix of all of the experience of the past time, the sights, sounds, tastes, smells, touch, emotions, contexts of understanding/story. Memory is not a static thing for me, it flows. Sometimes the flow is time like, sometimes it is story like, sometimes the associations are not available to my consciousness, and it seems to jump around (logically I believe that there will be a reason for the subconscious linking things in the way it does, but sometimes I have no conscious idea what those reasons might be).

Very rarely do I have access to the sort of full photographic memory that allows me to read from a page of a book I have only glanced at – and some of my friends seem to be able to do that.

So I would say that pictures are a subset of remembering.
