Dealing with pain

Question of the Day April 7, 2012 – Dealing with Pain

How Do You Deal with Pain?

I align completely with Torch on this one.

I have had to deal with quite a bit of pain, with tearing tendons and crushing discs in my back (giving over 30 years of pain), driving a nail through my foot from below, driving a garden fork through my foot from above, knocking out various teeth, then having the rest removed en-mass, various surgeries, including various skin grafts, various torn and snapped tendons, and a bit of appendix trouble.
My early attempts to manage pain involved fighting and resisting it, and didn’t work too well.

More recently (last 18 years) I have taken on simply accepting it, being informed by it, and then letting it go; which seems to work really well.

Associated with this approach, is a physical approach, that rather than protecting the body from pain by not moving, is to move into the pain, and gently and repetitively push into the pain, until full mobility is restored. Doing this on a daily basis I am back to playing golf, after having several years when it seemed I would never play golf again.
